Darfur refugees don’t have much to call their own, but now they have one thing: an all-refugee football team. Overcoming all obstacles and barriers, this team was brought together from twelve isolated refugee camps along the border of Chad – Sudan. Darfur United is not only an opportunity for the team to play competitively and represent their people, but it is also a movement – to bring hope, inspiration and joy to the displaced people of Darfur. Darfur United was probably the most popular team during the first CoNIFA World Football Cup.
Darfur is a region in western Sudan. An independent sultanate for several hundered years, it was incorporated into Sudan by Anglo-Egyptian forces in 1916. Because of the war in Darfur, the region has been in state of humanitarian emergency since 2003.
